Event: Narrative Grant Writing: Building a Coherent Story Across the Research Idea, Academic Profile and Key Outputs

Workshop Description

More and more research funders are moving away from conventional CV-based assessment towards narrative and evidence-based approaches, in which applicants are expected to explain the significance of their previous contributions and show how these connect to the research they now propose. Examples include several NWO funding schemes, such as Rubicon, Veni, Vidi and Vici. Similar approaches are also increasingly used internationally, including the UKRI Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI), used in schemes such as the Future Leaders Fellowships, the Luxembourg FNR Narrative CV, and Research Ireland’s Pathway Programme.

These formats ask researchers to do more than list publications, grants or achievements. They require applicants to build a coherent, evidence-based narrative connecting what they have done, what they have contributed, the expertise they have developed and what they propose to do next. This workshop focuses on how researchers can construct that narrative across the different components of a funding application, with particular attention to how this can be applied within urban and regional research.
